Are you looking to stretch and inspire your young mathematicians without racing ahead through the curriculum?
Join us for an engaging training session focused on developing greater depth in primary maths. This session will equip you with strategies to deepen children’s understanding, reasoning, and problem-solving skills—fostering deep mathematical thinkers.
Teachers will leave with a toolkit of effective strategies, ideas and practical approaches to use in the classroom. Whether you’re new to teaching or looking to refine your practice, this training will energise your maths teaching and help children to gain a greater understanding of mathematical concepts.
This training supports teachers in developing greater depth mathematicians at the primary level by focusing on deep conceptual understanding, reasoning, and problem-solving. The training will include discussion of strategies used to develop mathematical thinking, high-quality talk, and making connections across concepts. Teachers will strengthen subject knowledge and learn how to structure questioning to deepen understanding with the aim of nurturing confident, articulate, and reflective young mathematicians – children who can explain, justify, and explore strategies with independence and curiosity. Giving children the opportunity to ‘go deeper’ in their understanding of mathematical concepts.
This programme takes place on Tuesday 13 January and Wednesday 4 February, 4.00-5.00pm. To get the most out of this programme you should attend both sessions. It’s sutable for teachers, specific maths subject teachers, school leaders, senior leaders & teaching assistants in the primary phase.
This session will be led by two experienced and passionate teachers who have over 15 years of classroom expertise each: Claire Shorrock and Louise Seeley. Both Claire and Louise work for the BBO Maths Hub and have worked for MEI to write the Oak Academy Maths resources. Claire and Louise are both accredited to lead professional development and to lead school improvement through the NCETM.
Claire is an Assistant Maths Hub Lead for BBO Maths Hub, she plays a key role in developing and supporting high-quality maths teaching across the region. She leads on the NPQLPM (National Professional Qualification in Leading Primary Mathematics) and is also an experienced ECT facilitator, supporting early career teachers. With a deep understanding of effective pedagogy and a commitment to helping all pupils achieve mathematical depth, she brings both practical classroom insight and strategic leadership to her training.
Louise is a committed practitioner who currently serves as a class teacher and Maths Lead. As an NCETM-accredited Maths Specialist, Louise has played a key role in developing teaching for mastery within and beyond her setting. She has worked extensively across two regional Maths Hubs, contributing to teacher development through workgroups, CPD facilitation, and curriculum design support. With a firm belief that deep, conceptual understanding is at the heart of great maths teaching, Louise combines expert subject knowledge with practical classroom strategies that make maths accessible, challenging, and enjoyable for all learners.
