Being Aware of Scams
Despite what you may have heard in the media, the federal government does not offer “free money” or grants to individuals looking to start a business or cover personal expenses. If you are in need of personal financial help, the government offers federal benefit programs to help individuals and families reduce their outgoing and become financially self-sufficient.
Warning: if you receive information telling you that you qualify for a “free grant,” it is probably a scam. There is really helpful information available from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to help you learn to recognise and avoid government grant scams. You should file a complaint with the FTC if you have been a victim of a grant scam.
