Coaching is recognised as highly effective professional development, particularly for leadership roles. Research shows that coaching improves performance, increases confidence and motivation, develops and enhances leadership skills and helps leaders deal with the challenges of their role such as managing teams, improving relationships and making good decisions. We aspire to supporting all headteachers having access to a coach.
This strand of the Early Headship Programme will provide you with an experienced colleague and OTSA trained coach who will listen to you and help you to shape your identity as a school leader. You will take part in up to 6 one-hour coaching sessions over the year arranged at mutually convenient times and locations.
Before beginning the coaching programme, you will have a conversation to agree your specific needs. We will then, in discussion with you, match you with a suitable headteacher who has been trained as an OTSA coach. As each of the coaches is a current headteacher within an Oxfordshire school, they will understand your role and the context in which you work and will not only support you in shaping your leadership skills including in making decisions about the actions you want to take, but will also be available to offer advice and information.
Quotation from a past participant
The coaching element of the EHP has been invaluable to me in my first year of Headship. My coach has both challenged and advised me and listened and supported my decisions in a highly intuitive way; she has been a true inspiration during a year of spinning many different hats! I found her support invaluable and aspire to be as intuitive as she is in her position as Head. I would recommend any new Head to take part in the coaching element of the course. The calm reassurance and reflection have formed a vital part to the way in which I now work, and my coach has been intrinsic in helping me achieve this.
